All serious bands decide when itÆs time for a change. For Orange County,
CaliforniaÆs Thrice, it came slowly after its release of ôThe Artist and the
Ambulance.ö This work saw the band disconnect from the dizzying punk speeds
that fans were not so easy to let go of, into a pop realm that seemed
impossible of Thrice. ôVheissuö continued this musical explosion toward
experimentation and constant shouting vocals, hackneyed guitar riffs, and
endless headbanging breakdowns. Vocalist and guitarist Dustin KensrueÆs raw
emotion and gentle voice (at point point, it was nonexistent) carried the
record all the way through. ôVheissuö seemed to change the bandÆs style
forever.  ThriceÆs newest work, ôBeggars,ö had to be speedily released after an
un-mastered version was leaked onto the internet. The record will make its
physical release on September 15 through Vagrant records, but last week
Thrice released its sixth full-length record on iTunes. Like æArtist,Æ the
band pushes its already widely recognizable style.  The album drags the listener in with ôAll the World is Madö as guitars churn
along a thumping bass line. KensrueÆs voice is weary, his vocals matching the
songÆs lush and steady pieces as he yowls, ôWe are brimming with cumbersome,
murderous greed / And malevolence deep and profound / We do unspeakable
deeds, does our wickedness know any bounds?ö KensrueÆs relatively new
reservation to scream allows his eloquent words to shine through.  The second track is as equally as meticulous and precise. Its hypnotizing
guitar strum is no doubt at the hands of the talented Teppei Teranishi. Each
instrument is distinct in track, Riley Breckenridge drums steadily and they
work not to shock but drive the song forward, guitars battle for space. There
is even time for cascading piano, which adds to the enigmatic quality of the
song.  The record almost hits its peak with ôDoublespeak,ö a funky, piano-driven
track. ItÆs straight rock and roll.  ôTaking Through Glassö shoots classic Thrice, but thereÆs something
irresistible about Kensrue screaming in rage. Guitars shriek and bend,
keeping up with RileyÆs controlled rhythms. The song comes to an acoustic
halt, with television drowning in the background.  Instead of shouting from its rooftops, the bandÆs new found stoicism helps
build beautiful music. ôThe Great Experienceö builds and flows smoothly, like
a lullaby, and like ôCirclesö may be a song that didnÆt make it into
ôVheissu.ö  Thrice has already shown that they can move from the tumult of its ôIdentiy
Crisisö and æIllusion.ö The band has carved its musical identity, but itÆs
obvious that Thice isnÆt finished yet.- Track List —————————————————————- -
